Current State of Avalanche Gaming
This article seeks to explore the different games on the Avalanche blockchain and serves as a high-level snapshot of its current state at the time of writing. We have compiled an exhaustive list of Avalanche blockchain games, categorized them, and provided concise but detailed information on each game featured. This is one part of a series of articles to know the current state of various blockchains that build blockchain games and identify opportunities for partnerships.
Please be reminded that this article is written in a way that readers who are new to blockchain technology can follow. Users who are already familiar with the subject may skip these sections. Furthermore, due to the highly volatile nature of the blockchain industry, it would be prudent for readers to do their due diligence when deciding to participate in activities that may entail some form of investment.
Blockchain Games (GameFi)
Blockchain games, GameFi, NFT games, Crypto games, or Web 3.0 games refer to a new class of games that empowers players to utilize blockchain technology that will allow them unprecedented freedom and control over different aspects of the game. This gave rise to new gaming dynamics such as Play-to-Earn, Move-to-Earn, Play-and-Earn, and others that allow players to get rewarded with digital assets that have real-world value.
Rewards take the form of digital tokens or NFTs that can be traded outside the game. In many cases, these rewards are utilized within the game as a form of currency to buy in-game items, upgrades, or exclusive access to premium content. Some can be used as a form of governance token where holders can vote on the development direction of the game.
NFT rewards such as avatars, badges, game items, digital memorabilia, digital trading cards, digital art, and other NFT items are usually rare and unique making them valuable. Some consider them collectibles with valuations that can rival physical collector’s items, reaching values over a Million dollars. The highest value of an NFT game item ever sold was worth 300 ETH valued at around 1.1 Million.
Amongst all decentralized applications (dApps) across all blockchain platforms, GameFi has emerged as the most resilient blockchain vertical in the industry. Despite current market conditions, this vertical continues to gain new projects, attract sizable investments, and above all maintain a healthy number of daily users. Incidentally, the highest number of projects on Avalanche are blockchain games and game-related NFTs.
These include ports of highly successful web 2.0 games looking to incorporate blockchain technologies. They bring with them years of experience and expertise from the traditional gaming space as well as the opportunity to introduce millions of existing players to web 3.0 games. Indeed, blockchain gaming has come a long way from its humble beginnings just a few years ago.
The Emergence of Blockchain Technology
To add context to the current Avalanche gaming sector we deem it necessary to delve into the innovative design of the Avalanche blockchain and compare it to the leading smart-contract platform Ethereum. We will also feature a quick history of the evolution of blockchain to shed light on how this nascent technology jumped from being a new revolutionary financial tool to becoming the key technology for Web3.0
First-Generation Blockchain
The term blockchain came into existence when the bitcoin community started to describe the technology behind bitcoin during its early years. While this term was never mentioned by Satoshi Nakamoto in bitcoin’s whitepaper, he described transactions on this network as blocks that are chained together sequentially and secured by the Proof-of-Work protocol (PoW). Eventually, the community started to use the term blockchain technology.
Bitcoin’s blockchain is considered a first-generation blockchain as its primary function is to ensure that the data on the network is accurate at any given time. It also makes sure that everyone in the network has the exact entire data. Currently, each transaction takes 10 minutes before it is written on the blockchain under normal conditions. The bitcoin network can only process 7 transactions per second (TPS).
All transactions will have to undergo several confirmations with each confirmation taking the same amount of time. This means when using bitcoin, if a vendor requires 3 confirmations before they acknowledge your payment, you will have to wait 30 minutes before the transaction is considered consummated. This is exacerbated when the network is congested due to its limited capacity to process transactions.
Transaction fees are also significantly higher when the network is over its capacity. Devices that participate in the PoW consensus protocol commonly referred to as “Miners” will prioritize processing transactions with higher transaction fees. This creates a situation where users will have to “outbid” each other by allocating higher fees. There have been incidents where transaction fees are much higher than the value of the bitcoin being transferred.
For over a decade, bitcoin developers have introduced several solutions to address bitcoin’s scalability problem but they have failed to rally behind a single solution. Disagreements on how to scale bitcoin have split the community resulting in the creation of several bitcoin versions. While the largest bitcoin network retains the name bitcoin (BTC) other bitcoin versions claim they have greater fidelity to Nakamoto’s intended use of bitcoin.
Nevertheless, there is one thing that 1st-gen blockchains excel in, particularly those that use the Nakamoto consensus mechanism, which is its robustness. There has never been a major incident in the network. Its integrity has remained uncompromised and statistically speaking, has been operating 100% most of the time, dipping to 99.99% occasionally in rare contentious events that are resolved immediately.
Second-Generation Blockchain
The success of blockchain technology in securing the bitcoin network titillated the imagination of some community members within the bitcoin community. The most prominent of them is Vitalik Buterin, a Russian-Canadian programmer who suggested increasing the functionality of the bitcoin network. He believes blockchain technology was under-utilized and believes it can be upgraded to become more general-purpose to tap into its fullest potential.
Unfortunately, the bitcoin community rejected Vitalik’s suggestion. Eventually, he led the creation of Ethereum. Like bitcoin, it utilized the same robust PoW protocol (recently migrated to Proof-of-Stake) to secure its own network and added smart contract functionality. Smart contracts were coded using Solidity, a new programming language that allowed decentralized applications to run on Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).
Ethereum’s launch dawns the start of second-generation blockchains: blockchain platforms. Blockchain developers now have the necessary tools to create a wider range of decentralized applications (dApps) than previously possible. Using the Ethereum platform one can create one’s own cryptocurrency called “tokens,” establish verifiable digital identification, mint Non-fungible tokens (NFT), and more complex dApps such as the Metaverse and games.
However, Ethereum shared the same weaknesses as bitcoin. It is slow with a throughput of only 25 transactions per second. It also experiences significant delays in processing transactions when the network is overloaded, and during these times transaction fees are astronomically high. Still, it is the leading smart contract platform cornering a lion’s share of all relevant projects in the industry.
The release of Ethereum demonstrated the potential of blockchain technology outside financial applications. Blue chip companies began to explore its different use cases and identify the advantages of using such a technology. Nonetheless, the inability of Ethereum to scale, high transaction fees, the high carbon footprint of its PoW protocol, and the high learning curve hindered its progress toward mass adoption.
For years Ethereum developers have been trying to address its network’s weaknesses with many promising solutions but are slow to implement them. Ethereum has grown to become the largest smart contract platform as well as the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. Its developers are careful not to “break” the network as changes may expose it to exploits that can easily drain the digital assets stored in the platform.
Third-Generation Blockchain
As Ethereum developers struggle to address these weaknesses other blockchain developers have started to develop their own decentralized networks. They are considered 3rd-gen blockchains characterized by their blazingly fast processing times and low transaction fees. This lowers the barrier to entry for new users who want to experience decentralized applications and discover their unique value proposition.
It seems that the third-generation blockchains were poised to usher in the golden age for blockchain technology. The total value locked on the different blockchain projects continues to increase. The number of daily average users has exponentially grown and the value of digital assets, including their native token, skyrocketed. The blockchain industry is on the cusp of mass adoption, especially in the blockchain gaming sector.
For all their technological prowess, third-generation blockchains are confronted by two significant issues. First, to attain a high level of performance third-gen blockchains have a high degree of centralization. This carries significant risk as we will discuss later in this article. Second, most of the high-quality and relevant dApps were coded for the Ethereum blockchain which remains the go-to smart contract platform for many applications.
Very few third-generation blockchains can maintain their promise of decentralization while at the same time providing a high level of performance. Even fewer are those that are compatible with smart contracts designed for Ethereum. The Avalanche blockchain addresses these two.
Avalanche Blockchain
September 21st, 2022, marks the second anniversary of Avalanche’s mainnet launch. In a short period, Avalanche has become one of the leading players in the distributed ledger technology (DLT) ) industry, particularly in the smart contract platform. Its success can be attributed to its novel solution in tackling the blockchain trilemma which has been a major challenge for blockchain developers for years.
Ava Labs, the development team behind Avalanche blockchain, claims it is the fastest smart contract platform. This is based on the time it takes for a transaction to become irreversible or simply time-to-finality. Additionally, it has one of the most validators securing its network making it one of the most decentralized among blockchains that use a proof-of-stake protocol (PoS).
In just two years the number of decentralized applications on the Avalanche ecosystem has ballooned to almost 600 with Gamefi, Defi, and NFT emerging as the most active blockchain verticals. The ongoing bear market has not dampened the enthusiasm of developers who continue to build on Avalanche. Buoyed with the support of various investor groups, Avalanche Foundation has allocated tens of millions of AVAX to fund its growth.
Avalanche Rush, Multiverse, Culture Catalyst Initiative, and the Blizzard Fund are the four major funding initiatives of Avalanche Foundation totaling as much as $770 million. It comes as no surprise that many GameFi projects, especially those planning to deploy on multiple blockchains chose Avalanche. It not only offers a very scalable platform without sacrificing decentralization but also offers a very flexible design that can easily be customized to the requirements of the developers.
GameFi projects building on Avalanche will leverage its unique architecture that enables developers to seamlessly incorporate blockchain technologies without suffering the usual technological constraints associated when using them. They will also be able to utilize Avalanche’s highly flexible design which supports AVM, WASM, EVM, and custom VMs, enabling devs to easily port existing blockchain games coded in other chains into Avalanche.
Blockchain Trilemma
This section is a quick explanation of the blockchain trilemma. Those familiar with the subject may skip this part. We highly recommend those new to blockchain to read this section for a better appreciation of Avalanche blockchain
The trilemma states that distributed ledgers like blockchains are inherently constrained by three attributes: decentralization, scalability, and security. First, blockchains are decentralized when they do not rely on a central point of control. Second, they are scalable if they have the capacity to handle the number of transactions their network requires. Third, they are secure if they can continue to operate normally in any circumstance.
More decentralization lowers the ability of a blockchain to scale as it increases the time required to reach a consensus. On the other hand, scalability needs rapid consensus, which typically requires a decrease in the number of consensus participants, leading to a less decentralized blockchain. Ultimately blockchains that do not reach a certain degree of decentralization or scalability are considered less secure.
A less decentralized blockchain increases the risk of a single point of failure, undermining its security. On the other hand, unscalable blockchains may grind to a virtual halt. This may lead to the inability of users to access their digital assets in a timely manner exposing them to various risks that may result in significant financial losses.
Avalanche’s Novel Blockchain Design
The Avalanche development team came up with a two-prong solution to address the scalability problem of distributed ledger technology. They are described as vertical and horizontal scaling solutions.
Vertical Scaling Solution: Avalanche Consensus
Its vertical solution: Avalanche Consensus, enables its network to process 4,500 TPS with the potential to increase its capacity to over 20,000 transactions per second upon the release of a full production-ready version of its blockchain. This new consensus mechanism can achieve this feat without having to compromise decentralization, making it one of the safest and most scalable blockchains in the industry.
Let us take a deeper look inside the Avalanche consensus to understand how exactly they can achieve this. The stadium analogy is commonly used to illustrate this new consensus protocol.
Stadium Analogy
Visualize you are in a huge football stadium filled to its maximum capacity. Prior to entering the venue, everyone was given two commemorative coins colored red and blue. They seem to match the colors and insignia of the two opposing teams. Curious as you are, you wondered which team the crowd is leaning towards and began asking random people to show the coin of the team they support.
It would take an enormous amount of time and effort to ask everyone, hence you only ask 5 people just to get a sense of which team they support. Knowing that this is not enough to get the general sentiment of the crowd you do this repeatedly, asking different groups of people while keeping a tally of which team the majority supports. The more groups you ask the more confident you feel in determining the crowd favorite.
After a couple of polling rounds, it was abundantly clear that the team you support was not as popular as you think. Not to be identified with the minority you switch sides and now support the majority. Before you can make another polling round someone asked you and 4 random people to show the coin of the team each of you supports. Instead of showing your original choice, you showed the coin that the majority chose.
It turns out you are not the only one who wants to know what team the majority of the people in the stadium support, everyone in the stadium was doing the same. They were also asking random groups of people and tallying the results. Similarly, they also switch sides once they noticed they were not aligned with the majority. It didn’t take long for everyone to become part of the majority hence reaching a consensus.
Avalanche Consensus Core Mechanics
The stadium analogy is similar to how the Avalanche reaches consensus. At its core is the repeated random sampling of nodes and metastable decision-making ( decision-making in an uncertain state or circumstance that can easily be disturbed or influenced.). Its consensus is based on a probabilistic conclusion in which a validator node is not required to interact with all the nodes in the network. This makes reaching a Consensus extremely fast.
To illustrate this mechanism let us consider a hypothetical situation where the Avalanche network needs to resolve a contentious event when two transactions seem to contradict each other. The network is made of thousands of nodes from which one randomly acts as a validator node. The node was chosen arbitrarily among the regular nodes and has its own choice of record of the transaction.
Acting as a validator it samples 5 other nodes to check their position on the contradicting transactions. If the majority of the nodes lean towards one transaction, then in this instance, the validator node identifies that transaction as the correct choice. If this differs from its own choice then the acting validator node changes its transaction record to match the majority choice of that sample. Conversely, if its transaction record concurs with the choice of the majority, the validator does not change its choice,
The acting validator node repeats the above-mentioned process by sampling another set of random nodes. Every time it iterates this process the network exponentially accelerates toward consensus. Since only a sample of the nodes is required during polling and consensus building several nodes can act as validator nodes further accelerating the process of converging toward consensus.
Horizontal Scaling Solution: Avalanche’s 3 Blockchains Architecture
The Architects of Avalanche made sure that their blockchain will scale to mass adoption. This means they designed their network to scale beyond its normal throughput threshold of 4,500 TPS. In order to do, this they designed the Avalanche blockchain to have three specialized and interoperable blockchains: Exchange Chain. Platform Chain and Contract Chain They are responsible for carrying out very specific tasks within the network.
Exchange Chain (X-Chain)
As the name implies the Exchange Chain is primarily responsible for the creation, exchange, and management of digital assets within the Avalanche ecosystem. It uses the same consensus mechanism as Avalanche’s primary network whose primary role now is to validate the three built-in blockchains. X-chain is tailored specially for sending and receiving funds with a fixed transaction fee of 0.001 AVAX.
Platform Chain (P-Chain)
The P-Chain functions as the metadata blockchain on Avalanche. It is used to create and keep track of active Subnets, coordinate validators and provide staking mechanisms. This chain is primarily used to stake AVAX to serve as a validator. Avax rewards are also distributed here. Unlike X-chain P-Chain uses Snowman consensus protocol which is a modified version of Avalanche’s consensus mechanism optimized for Platform Chain and Contract Chain use.
Contract Chain (C-Chain)
The primary function of the C-Chain is for the creation of smart contracts which in turn enables the Avalanche blockchain to create decentralized applications. This chain is compatible with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), making it possible and easy to port Ethereum-based dApps into Avalanche. It also uses the same consensus mechanism of P-Chain, Snowman.
More on Subnets
Subnets are essentially copies of the main Avalanche Network. It is a group of validators with the primary function of achieving consensus for one or multiple blockchains. Once created it has its own set of rules for memberships, token incentive models, distribution, and other tokenomics parameters. Subnets are especially useful for developers who want to customize various aspects of a blockchain.
Subnets validate blockchains built on top of them and are required to validate the main Avalanche network.. This means subnets do not add additional workload to its main network. Projects with dApps running on the main network may choose to move to a Subnet for better performance, lower transaction fees, or implement application-specific requirements such as GameFi use cases.
With Subnets, Avalanche seems to have found the solution to infinitely scale the Avalanche blockchain as it is theoretically possible to create an infinite number of subnets without degrading the performance of the network. All Subnets are required to Stake 2,000 AVAX tokens, more Subnets equates to deflationary pressure on AVAX token
Avalanche Gaming Scene
As we have seen above AVA LABS pulls out all the stops to create a blockchain network that is not only decentralized but also has the capacity to scale globally. This puts them in the unique position to attract many new and existing projects to build on their architecture. This is especially true for GameFi verticals where a majority of Avalanche’s projects belong.
